Boys benefit from camping with Character

Camping in the great outdoors provides us with the opportunity to introduce our boys to a wide variety of experiences so they can learn and grow and explore, get ahead, be smart and well-rounded. We really think taking kids camping is one of the best things you we do with your boys, even, and especially, while they are very young.

There is just something special about taking a boy on a camp, and it provides an extraordinary opportunity for us to speak into the lives of the boys that we work with. It is a time away from technology, in the “wild” outdoors, full of adventure and new experiences – creating memories that will last a lifetime.  We do several weekend and school holiday camps throughout the year with different themes. All camps are age group specific and we offer a number of different kinds of camping experiences, aligned with our curriculum - our camps build character!

The Character Company offers a number of camp experiences, and whilst we operate on a first-come-first-served, we do our best to ensure that every single boy on our program gets the opportunity to participate in at least one camp per year!

Our camps follow our annual curriculum and each will have a camp theme and provide opportunities to impart our 5 biblical values, as well as fun opportunities to push personal limits in a safe and controlled environment.

Adventure education often makes use of practical skills that will benefit an individual in areas beyond the activities. Campers will begin to recognize the inner resources, strengths, and positive qualities within themselves and within their friends. Reflecting and debriefing on the experience or ‘adventure’ afterwards allows the boys to learn more about their personal behaviour and contributions. This feedback informs them of the performance of the group as well and gives us an opportunity to relate this new understanding back to their everyday lives and routine to create positive change.

Michael Moore - MENtor

'Uncle Michael' is one of our trusted Mentors with a heart of gold, he is an Industrial Designer by trade and a caring animal lover as well as being one of our most vocal advocates! He was born in Kenya, grew up on a dairy farm in KwaZulu-Natal and now lives in Johannesburg.

Michael is our 'arts & crafts' person and his creative energy is always a great resource on rainy days at camp.

Marnius.png

Marinus de Kok - MENtor

Originally from the town of Vereeniging, I moved to Cape Town with my folks at a very young age. I matriculated here and then went on to study Industrial Psychology at Stellenbosch University. My spare time was spent mainly making music, in music ministry, or working for my father at his service station.  I completed my Master's degree in Industrial Psychology, with the focus of my research on remedying unemployment through affirmative development.

At home I am married for four years to the sweetest woman you can imagine. My wife and I are known as "the love birds." She is a teacher by profession and her name is Yvette. We are expecting our first (a little girl) this year and we are very excited.

I have seen what fatherlessness is causing in our society. I believe it to be central to so many problems in the world, particularly violence against women - which upsets me deeply. I have seen what a good father looks like through what my own dad is, and has been, for me. Furthermore, so many caring older male figures have guided and supported me in my life - without whom, I would not be where I am today.

Tim Ross - Regional Character & MENtor

Tim grew up in Johannesburg before pursuing forestry as a career at the University of Stellenbosch – mostly to avoid the traffic and pursue fly-fishing and enjoy great coffee!  Forestry has enabled him to live in some beautiful places locally and travel to breathtaking vistas around the globe.

He currently works for an East African based forestry company and often travels to Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, and less exotic destinations like Zimbabwe.

Tim married up – an industrial engineer in the forestry sector – and lives in Pretoria with his amazing wife, son and daughter.  Growing up without a dad, but surrounded by capable MENtors, having a son of his own, and seeing the impact of absent dad’s through his travels, has given Tim a burning desire and passion for fathering and sons.

By partnering with TCC, Tim hopes to raise men that will live pure, speak truth, drink great coffee, act justly, read Lord of the Rings, right wrong, catch big fish, walk humbly, hike far, love hard, stand strong and honour the king!

Bradlee is always involved in mission trips. Every December he helps put together a Christmas party for the underprivileged in Polopark.

His mission is to change one child’s life at a time starting with his adopted 4 year old son.

Curriculum Guide

Our curriculum guide is there to help you as MENtor to be more intentional with the boys. Every month has a theme with 5 weekly talk topics. It also includes articles for reading and activities to do with the boys. Some or most months will only have 4 weeks, so this gives you, the MENtor, the opportunity to choose which talk topics will be more relevant to your specific group of boys.

MENtors are required to prepare for their sessions by reading through the talk topics included in the curriculum guide but are encouraged to incorporate their own ideas and activities as long as it supports the monthly theme and weekly topics. Remember that these topics were chosen for a specific reason.

REMEMBER: Simply providing resources for a mentee is not mentoring. That is the minimum requirement to setup an appropriate learning environment. Mentoring takes place in the personal interactions with the mentee.

The curriculum guide will be revised and improved on a regular basis and will continue to develop with your help. While we try to include up to date and relevant content, there are resources of which we are unaware, and there is firsthand expertise and experience that can enhance and supplement the existing material, but we can only get this additional content from a greater community of mentors. So please feel free to comment on the layout, grammar, content and activity suggestions. We welcome your input! Feedback can be sent to willie.ch@racter.co.za

You will notice that some months may have more Talk Topics then there are weeks, this gives you - the MENtor, the opportunity to choose which Talk Topic might be more relevant to you specific group of boys. However it is important that you stick to the month’s THEME at all times.

MENtors are required to prepare and orientate themselves by reading through the Talk Topics included in their hard copy manuals or through the links provided on this page. We are working to specifically expand the Talk Topics, creating a number of talks suited to each developmental age. MENtors are encouraged to incorporate their own ideas into designing an activity from the Activities Ideas downloads we provide for each month.

A weekly feedback report should be completed - by MENtors to help with overall programme monitoring and evaluation. The feedback must be submitted to the National Head Office within the week of your activity. Should you have more urgent feedback, please contact Loraine immediately.

Remember! You lead by example...
